Since 2011 Focus On Women supports The Code, the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children and Adolescents from Sexual Exploitation in Tourism Sector. The Code is an initiative born from the tourism industry in order to create awareness, tools and support for the tourism industry to prevent sexual exploitation of girls and boys around the world. As of today more than 1,300 companies in the sector have signed the Code and more than 11,000 professionals have been trained in 66 countries of the world. All The Code members must meet the following criteria:

  • 1

Establish an ethics policy and procedures against sexual exploitation of children and adolescents

  • 2

Train employees on child rights, prevention of sexual exploitation and how to report suspected cases.

  • 3

Include a clause in contracts with service providers establishing a policy of zero tolerance to child sexual exploitation.

  • 4

Provide information to travellers on child rights, prevention of child sexual exploitation and how to report suspected cases.

  • 5

Support, collaborate and involve all stakeholders and partners in the prevention of child sexual exploitation.

  • 6

Report annually about the implementation of The Code in the organization.

The Code is one of the first initiatives of the sector, which has defined the roles and responsibilities of the companies of the tourist sector in relation to child sex tourism. The purpose of The Code is to work together with companies in the sector to fight against this crime. Working to meet day-to-day the six criteria of The Code, the tourism industry, such as Focus On Women, can integrate the protection of children within our priorities. The six criteria were formulated to turn the protection of children into action. In this way the participating companies commit to sustainable and ethical tourism taking part in actual actions that help to protect children of the world from sexual exploitation.
